How to Actually Set Goals (what no one ever told you)

For starters, you’ve probably been told to write your goals down. 

Which is a good start, but I don’t want you to start there. 

Here’s what I’ve learned from literally the best in the world… 

Get into a PEAK state.

Start with your state of mind. 

What does that even mean? 

I’m referring to getting into a peak state of mind. 

You know those moments when you just feel almost invincible or like you’re just on a roll? 

Imagine you could cue your mind to do this on demand. 

The beauty of this? 

It can be done in a variety of ways and yes, you can do this on demand when you practice this. 

For example: after a great workout, or after listening to some music that gets you amped up. 

Or even after having a productive day or just getting a big task accomplished. 

If you really want to be so daring, try cold water. 

Either take a cold shower, or jump into a cold body of water. 

Great for waking your body up, not so great to practice right before going to bed. 

Another great way to get into peak states include incantations where you are literally speaking out loud positive statements about yourself. 

Sure, may sound weird to you, but most of the people on the world’s biggest stages are doing this in order to get their mind right and in the zone for what they’re about to do. 

Now for the next part: 

Your Story

You may not be able to change the beginning of your story, but you can change where it goes from here. 

The most important conversation we’ll have in our lives is the one we have with ourselves. 
Meaning our daily self-talk. 

If you’re constantly putting yourself down and talking harshly to yourself, you’re going to have a tough time reaching for those big goals you have. 

Because here’s the scary part: 

You will not consistently act in a way that is incongruent with your belief system. 

In laymen’s terms: 

If you think you can’t, you’re right. 

So, we need to work on changing the inner-dialogue between you and yourself. 

What’s your story? 

I’m not smart enough. I don’t know the right people. I don’t have enough money. Etc., 

Doesn’t matter. 

The key is to change it. 

If you look for excuses or problems, you’ll find them. 

If you look for solutions, you’ll find those as well. 

What if you started saying to yourself statements like: 

“I can figure this out.” Or, “I’ll find a way to make the time.” Or, “I’m going to no matter what…” 

See the difference? 

Now for the final piece (and yes, these are in order): 

Your Strategy

Let’s say you’re in a beautiful peak state of mind and you have crafted an excellent story that helps you feel great about yourself and what you’re capable of, but then your strategy is to sit on your couch. 

My guess is, you’re not going to come close to reaching your goals (unless they’re on Netflix).

Your strategy is the plan of action to go from thinking about your goals to actually moving towards them. 

Get clear on what it is you’re going for. 

Then work backwards on how to achieve it. 

First, start with getting into a peak state, then craft a better story, and finally develop a strategy to get you where you want to go.
